Gábor Sunyovszky

BSc. civil engineer

Having obtained a civil engineering degree (BSc) from Ybl Miklós Technical College in 1999, I continued to attend numerous professional courses to keep my knowledge up to date and my licences valid. In 2018 I received an „NATM Master of Engineering” (MEng.) degree in the joint master’s program of Graz University of Technology and University of Leoben in specializied field of tunnel construction and contract management.

During the first decade of my professional career, I gained international experience in the field of project management and on-site technical operations in large infrastructure projects. I started at a subcontractor of enormous German and Austrian construction companies (HOCHTIEF, Bilfinger & Berger, Walter Bau, Universale) before joining the tunnelling division of STRABAG AG for projects in Germany and Austria. I was involved in the tender and construction of the Budapest Metro4 Project as a certified construction manager and senior construction manager of BAMCO, the tunnelling consortium established by STRABAG Group, VINCI CGP and Hídépítő. Later on, I also participated on STRABAG AG’s side in the construction of the Bátaszék tunnel chain of motorway M6/M60. These major infrastructure projects included tunnels, as well as other engineering structures, civil and structural engineering works, utilities and roads, which enabled me to gain further experience in these fields. Besides construction management, I had an important role to play in design coordination, preparation of offers, as well as contract and claim management.

In 2010 I established SUNYOVSZKY CONSULTING, an independent consultancy firm, and over the past 10 years, I have worked as a consultant. During this period, I have provided FIDIC claim management services primarily to a STRABAG Group company, as well as other projects. As part of my consultancy activities, I have participated in contractual procedures with the Engineer, the DAB and the Court of Arbitration. My contribution has resulted in the successful enforcement of contractor’s claims and defence against employer’s counterclaims in a total amount of tens of millions of euros.

Since 2017 I am a workgroup member of the Public Road Structures Committee of the Hungarian Road and Railway Society (MAÚT) working on new technical specifications for road construction. I am also an active member of the Hungarian Tunnelling Association, where I was member of the Supervisory Committee between 2018 and 2020, thereupon I was elected to Member of the Board.

The main focus of SUNYOVSZKY CONSULTING is to provide specialist engineering support in construction projects, i.e. project management consultancy, contract management and claim management, as well as related risk management, primarily in the field of infrastructure, transport construction and civil engineering projects.

The most comprehensive services can be provided, if employers decide on the involvement of an expert right from the preparatory phase, however, external support is also recommended at later stages for a successful completion.

In addition to the above activities, previous hands-on practical and management experience in special fields of construction – tunnel construction and repair of reinforced concrete structures – enables SUNYOVSZKY CONSULTING to provide extra support in each phase of such projects, from technical preparation to successful completion of the warranty period, with the involvement of renowned (foreign) partners, if necessary.

Experience suggests that the main target group of engineering consultancy services are principal contractors (sometimes subcontractors) of large-scale projects funded by a state or the EU. However, as deadlines get tighter, prices higher, and contract terms stricter, a broader client base also includes developers of private industrial projects, residential estates and even private family houses. The trend points towards clients – on both contractors’ and developers’ sides – who perceive the need for professional support at early stages of a project.
